Other Languages -> Java

Prerequisites for Java Programming

- by Coolio on 05/24/06, 9:47PM CEST (1584 Views)

Why should I choose Java?

While Java isn’t the most popular language currently in use it has one very significant aspect that sets it apart from the others. Most programming languages require the programmer to alter their code depending on the platform they are aimed at; Windows, Linux etc. However with Java this is not the case, it adopts the philosophy "write once, run everywhere" and will run the same code on any computer that has the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed.

Getting Started

In order to create your first Java program it is recommended that you first install the latest version of the Java Development Kit (JDK) which will allow you to compile your program code. You will also require a standard text editor to create your program code. For anyone who wants to run a program you create they would need to make sure they have downloaded the JRE (included with the JDK).

Both kits can be found at java.sun.com, be sure to check the installation notes for how to setup the Environment Variables.

That's all for now, be sure to check on the next article - "Basic syntax of a Java program".

According to http://www.tiobe.com/tpci.htm Java HAS been one of the most popular programming languages for a few years now :P It has been battling with C/C++ (as it has some advantages and some disadvantages over those), but Java seems to be holding its own.

"The TIOBE Programming Community index gives an indication of the popularity of programming languages. The index is updated once a month. The ratings are based on the world-wide availability of skilled engineers, courses and third party vendors. The popular search engines Google, MSN, and Yahoo! are used to calculate the ratings. Observe that the TPC index is NOT about the BEST programming language or the language in which MOST LINES OF CODE have been written."
